TRANS RIGHTS

Problem

Transgender Americans are under coordinated political and social attack nationwide.

What was once a fight for equal access to healthcare, safety, and dignity has escalated into laws banning care, criminalizing families, and erasing young people.

The crisis is measurable, not imagined.

Escalating discrimination:

  • Over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills filed nationwide in the last year, most targeting trans people

  • More than 20 states are banning gender-affirming care for trans youth

  • Laws threaten to:

    • Criminalize parents

    • Punish doctors

    • Restrict bathroom access

    • Force teachers to out students.

Violence and harassment:

  • Trans people, especially women of color, face disproportionate violence.

  • Hate crimes against LGBTQ people have risen steadily for five years.

  • Trans women are among the most targeted groups for homicide.

Healthcare denial:

  • Nearly 30 percent of trans people report being refused care.

  • Insurance exclusions leave many unable to pay for medically necessary treatment.

  • Lack of providers forces long waitlists—even in states where care is legal.

Youth in danger:

  • LGBTQ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide.

  • Nearly 50 percent of trans youth seriously consider suicide.

  • Research shows gender-affirming care reduces suicide risk by up to 73 percent.

Family and economic harm:

  • States propose removing custody from supportive parents.

  • Trans adults face higher rates of:

    • Unemployment

    • Homelessness

    • Poverty

  • Nearly 40 percent of homeless youth are LGBTQ.

This is not a culture debate.

It is a manufactured crisis targeting a community already facing insecurity and violence.

Solutions

1. Protect gender-affirming healthcare

  • Guarantee access to:

    • Hormone therapy

    • Puberty blockers

    • Surgical care, where appropriate

  • Ban insurance discrimination against transition-related treatment.

  • Block laws criminalizing doctors, parents, or patients.

  • Federally protect intersex infants from nonconsensual surgeries.

Impact:Trans people and families are able to access necessary healthcare safely, legally, and with confidence that their rights are protected.

2. Safeguard trans youth in schools

  • Ban forced outing of students.

  • Require school nondiscrimination protections covering:

    • Gender identity

    • Gender expression

  • Allow students to:

    • Use facilities that match their identity.

    • Join school activities safely.

  • Expand Title IX enforcement to explicitly include gender identity.

Impact: Schools become supportive environments, ensuring that all students can learn, participate, and be themselves without fear or discrimination.

3. Protect families from criminalization

  • Guarantee parental rights for families supporting trans youth.

  • Block state laws attempting to:

    • Remove custody

    • Criminalize affirming care

  • Ensure family medical decisions remain between families and doctors.

Impact:Families remain united and confident in supporting their trans children, protected from criminalization or custody threats.

4. Ensure housing, jobs, and public access

  • Strengthen civil rights protections in:

    • Housing

    • Public accommodations

    • Employment

  • Fund:

    • LGBTQ youth shelters

    • Housing vouchers

    • Job training and placement

  • Require equal access to ID documents and name/gender marker changes.

Impact: Economic conditions improve: trans people gain access to stable employment, housing, and public life, thereby reducing poverty and exclusion.

5. Prevent violence and enforce safety

  • Track and publish accurate data on hate crimes

  • Increase funding for:

    • Community-based violence prevention

    • Survivor support

  • Require law enforcement to:

    • Investigate hate crimes responsibly.

    • Undergo cultural competency training.

Impact: Trans safety is prioritized: violence is prevented, survivors supported, and hate crimes investigated, building genuine public safety.

6. Protect online safety and expression

  • Prevent censorship of trans-related health information.

  • Protect online platforms that allow:

    • Resource sharing

    • Peer support

    • Safety planning

  • Block laws that restrict speech or ban digital communities.

Impact: Trans people can freely access vital information, build connections, and organize safely online without fear of censorship or exclusion.

Bottom Line

Trans people deserve safety, autonomy, opportunity, and dignity—without exception.

Ensuring trans rights means:

  • Medical decisions stay with families and doctors.

  • Kids can learn without fear.

  • Adults can work, live, and thrive openly.

  • Violence and discrimination are confronted and dismantled.

  • Freedom applies to everyone, not just those with power.

A country that protects its most targeted communities protects everyone.
